By controlling your motivations, I mean being able to manipulate yourself by empahsizing or demphasizing certain thoughts so as to rally yourself toward a goal. For example, if you want to make money, you could put a picture of a BMW on your desktop wallpaper to keep appealing to your desire for material things to get you moving.
This would be an example of your will--your desire to achieve a certain goal--amplifying other desires--your desire for material posessions--to get you to eek out productivity.
When you start tweaking with the strengths of various motivations, you start controlling your destiny.
Another effect I've noticed in doing this is that you also become less victim to automatic motivators.
Normally you might be motivated by fear of failure or fear of reprisal, but now that you have discovered other motivations, the pressure from those fears becomes weakened.
what you lack in willpower your body compensates for in automatic response.
If you can't orient your life properly, forces will orient your life for you. This is fine, except less of your life will be of your choosing.
